9/11: Control the Skies is a gripping documentary special chronicling the story of how Air Traffic Controllers in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland pulled off the impossible.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, four horrifying crashes result in the FAA unprecedentedly closing U.S airspace. 500 planes are travelling westbound towards North America; where can they, and thousands of passengers, land safely? Will more planes be used as Al-Qaeda missiles?
Of the 500 planes, 333 turn back to their origin, but 167 are past the point of no return. There is one tiny place on the map that has eyes on them all: Gander. The lives of 45,000 people over the Atlantic are now in the hands of a small team of air traffic controllers in this remote, rural town with a population of 10,000. These unsung ATC heroes draw on their skill, experience and raw talent to achieve the impossible - landing 167 planes in three hours, without a single incident!
